Despite its prominence, Boston is a relatively compact city, especially when it comes to the historic core and most popular tourist attractions. Luxury hotels are poised on the most coveted grounds, with views of the harbour and historic architecture. But that doesn’t mean visitors have to spend exorbitant amounts of money. Prices drop considerably outside of town or across the river in Cambridge, but guests will still feel connected to the city centre.
Even so, the downtown district is still the most popular place to stay, and practically every well-known hotel chain has a branch in the city. Independently operated inns and bed and breakfasts are often housed in historic buildings and offer better prices. The most exclusive neighbourhoods are Beacon Hill and Back Bay.
The downtown district has the most variety when it comes to lodging. This is where the city’s most historic hotels are located, including the nation’s longest running hotel, the Omni Parker House. The Fairmont Copley Plaza is also historic, though more upscale. The downtown area adjoins the waterfront and there are several beautiful hotels with views over the harbour.
Back Bay is only slightly offset from the city’s historic centre and offers more in the way of luxury. The Sheraton, Hilton Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons are all here, delivering consistent service and comprehensive amenities. The Marriot and Westin hotels are also found in this area, and are a little less expensive.
The South End is the city’s art district, home to numerous galleries, studios and a thriving gay community. The Chandler Inn Hotel is a nice mid-range option in this area. The theatre district borders this part of town and hosts a greater range of hotels including a Radisson and the sophisticated Courtyard Boston Tremont Hotel.
While Cambridge is not technically part of Boston, it offers an excellent range of accommodation options that aren’t far from the city’s sites. The universities have paved the way for mid-range hotels that can accommodate visiting families. Options here include The Inn at Harvard, the Best Western and Harvard Square Hotel. The Charles Hotel is one of Cambridge’s finest and offers the full gamut of luxury amenities.
Business travellers are catered for in the financial district, which is part of the downtown block. Large convention centres are found here, and the local hotels are equipped to address business concerns and accommodate large conferences. Lexington and Waltham neighbourhoods have a selection of ultra-modern hotels that are also suitable for business travellers.
