Koh Chang hotels

While the more westernised Thai resorts of the better-known Koh Samui and Phuket bustle with loud bars, Koh Chang remains a haven of tranquillity. However, this tranquillity does not mean that Koh Chang does not offer a full range of fantastic places to stay. Accommodation on the island is mostly in the form of mid-range private beach bungalows and villas, but there are some exclusive options on the west coast for those looking for luxury.

Bungalows come in all sizes, from family sized abodes to those perfect for couples. Those on a shoestring will also be able to find basic but comfortable bungalow accommodation on the island's less sought-after beaches. Eco-tourism has taken off here and many resorts boast a friendly approach to conserving Koh Chang's natural beauty.

The beaches of the west coast of the island are home to superb resorts, with the Amari Emerald Cove on the south end of Klong Prao Beach perhaps being the pick of the litter. Five-star luxury on the beach front is available with poolside massage service to wash away your troubles while watching the sun set over the sea from an outdoor cocktail bar.

Also situated on Klong Prao is the excellent Aana Resort and Spa, where apartments and bungalows are arranged on split levels and connected by wooden walkways and staircases. Aana boasts a beautiful private beach accessible by canoe through the adjacent lagoon and on its rooftop, there is a striking infinity pool.

The island's west coast lagoon is also home to one of Koh Chang's best dining experiences, with the Blue Lagoon Resort being home to an excellent Thai cookery school and a fine restaurant. Blue Lagoon is also a quirky place to stay, with bamboo bungalows and cottages looking over the beautifully-lit lagoon.

Just south of Klong Prao Beach is Kae Bae Beach, another study in white sand and crystal clear blue sea. Kae Bae boasts scuba diving and snorkelling trips from the beach as well as the fine Sea View Resort and Spa. The name of the resort is apt, perched as it is on the beach front with spectacular views of the sea and the island's stunning sunsets.

Further along Koh Chang's west coast is the pretty bay of Ban Lan, home to the luxurious Dusit Princess Hotel and yet another perfect white sand beach, while along the coast and on the southwest tip of the island is the Bang Bao Peninsular, an oasis of peace and serenity. Bang Bao boasts the luxurious Nirvana Resort, where guests can relax and be pampered in individual bungalows and plush suites, all with balcony views out over the crystal waters.

The main access point to Koh Chang is its ferry port, located on the north coast of the island, and there are some terrific beaches and resorts close by. Klong Son Bay, just five minutes' drive from the arrivals pier, hosts the spectacular Aiyapura Resort and Spa and yet another paradise beach. Accommodation at the Aiyapura is in the form of beautiful Thai villas in lush tropical gardens and with the ubiquitous breathtaking views of the Gulf of Thailand.

One of Koh Chang's unique selling points is its spectacular sunsets, so it is no coincidence that the majority of its resorts are based on the west coast of the island. The east coast of the island has far fewer hotels and resorts but does still boast spectacular scenery, verdant rainforest and several stunning waterfalls.
