Thailand's capital is as urban as any metropolis can be, with a decentralised grid cut by flyover expressways and the Chao Phraya River. It's hard to pin down a ‘city centre', and instead visitors are advised to pick a district that interests them and find a hotel that suits their needs.
Absolutely every budget is accommodated for in Bangkok, from the most basic backpacker sanctuary to lavish, five-star suites with views of the river and historic temples. Most of Bangkok's luxury hotels are near Silom Road and the Chao Phraya River, while the rock-bottom bargains are found on Khao San Road.
Bangkok's finest hotels include The Oriental and the Shangri-La, both of which are situated along the river and have solid reputations among the city's most affluent visitors. Following Sathorn and Silom roads away from the river, visitors will find other upscale hotels like The Peninsula, Marriot and the Westin Grande Sukhumvit.
Pratunam is a hip district that draws young locals with its shopping and entertainment scene. The sheer scale of the marketplaces here is incredible, with innumerable vendors dealing in funky Asian fashions, knock-off brands and myriad electronics. Sukhumvit Road is the most important artery here, with its own collection of tourist-oriented restaurants and hotels like the Grand Hyatt and Conrad Bangkok.
Banglamphu, specifically Khao San Road, is a mecca for travellers on a shoestring. Inexpensive restaurants and nightlife complement the guest houses in this area. Atmosphere and ambience are rare commodities in Banglamphu, but that's rarely a priority for tourists staying here.
Chinatown and the neighbouring Indian community are bustling centres of commerce, with colourful markets and numerous gold shops. Bargain hunters can lose themselves in Chinatown. Mid-range and budget hotels are widespread and appeal to those looking for a colourful cultural experience.
Sathorn and Silom is Bangkok's central business district and is bursting with accommodation options. Nice restaurants, large-scale shopping centres and open-air markets are all found here, as are a few of the city's luxury hotels. The Banyan Tree, The Sukhothai and The Four Seasons are all located in this area and offer excellent amenities.
Heading away from Sathorn and Silom roads, travellers will find the Chao Phraya River. Fashionable, five-star hotels are situated here as well, each enjoying sweeping views over the river and operating their own gourmet restaurants. Perennial favourites like the Hilton Millennium command the most attention.
