Zermatt is a compact destination with around half a dozen streets only, so visitors don't have a choice of different districts or neighbourhoods in which to reside during their stay. The town is entirely pedestrianised and the only engine-powered vehicles allowed in are those making deliveries to its various businesses.

With fantastic skiing opportunities on its doorstep, the town is well used to receiving visitors and since its popularity as a winter sport destination was established, it has done plenty to ensure that its local infrastructure caters to the needs of its visiting population.

Hotels are abundant in Zermatt and prices are typical of popular European holiday destinations. For accommodation in the mid-range, Hotel Allain, located right in the centre of town, is a good choice. The hotel offers great views of the Matterhorn and is well known for its friendly and helpful staff. Also in this price range is the Walliserhof Swiss Quality Hotel, located in the town centre on Bahnhofstrasse.

If you're prepared to pay a bit more, then you can enjoy the comforts of the town's more upmarket hotels. In this category, the Mont Cervin is considered one of the best and as it's part of a chain, it gives guests the opportunity to dine in other establishments in the town that are under the same ownership.

Other classy establishments in the town include the Omnia, a luxury hotel based on a traditional Swiss Alpine lodge design and the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, a five-star hotel that boasts horse-drawn carriage pick-ups for guests arriving at the town's train station.

If you are looking to cut costs, consider camping. Though the cold may preclude this as an option in the winter season, at other times of the year the weather is suitable for sleeping under canvas. During the summer months, a site located just 100 metres to the left of the train station opens up for campers, offering reasonable rates for overnight stays. You'll need your own tent and equipment as neither is provided; however, the site comes with shower and bath facilities.

Affordable hotel-style accommodation is available in the town at Hotel Bahnhof, located just east of the Bahnhofplatz. Here visitors will find shared rooms plus single and double abodes at prices that won't break the bank. Inexpensive lodgings can also be found at the Schönbielhütte, an establishment operated by the Schweizer Alpen-Club and situated close to the base of the Matterhorn.
