Hotels in Basel range from youth hostels all the way up to five-star quality and most are located right in the city centre, where you have easy access to everything. Hotels are often tight to come by in Basel; not because of the lack of them but because of the sheer demand.

If you plan to visit during the Swiss Industries Fair and the Carnival festival, hotels need to be booked way in advance. The height of summer and the winter ski season are also very busy times.

Basel has a good selection of high quality hotels to complement its mid-range hotels and youth hostels. The best hotels in Basel include: the Hotel Drei Könige (Hôtel des Trois Rois), the Swisshotel Le Plaza, and the Teufelhof. The Teufelhof is one of the best hotels in the city and a unique place to stay. It was converted from a medieval mansion and features excellent facilities, while service and quality in all high-end Basel hotels is extremely good.

Basel also has a fair number of mid-range hotels and short-term apartments which may be an option if all the top-end hotels are booked during the main holidays and festivals in the city.

Most Basel hotels are located right in the city centre where the main attractions, museums, shops, and restaurants and bars can be found. If you get a hotel right in town, you will be within walking distance of everything.

The Bruderholz district is a pretty area to be based in Basel. It has loads of attractive villas and a nice atmosphere, with the Wasserturm as the main highlight. Stucki Restaurant, Basel's best, can also be found in this region of town.

Bahnhofsviertel, or the Bahnhofsareal, encompasses the Central Train Station and is the second most busy hotel area after the city centre. Bahnhofsviertel has many big hotels and there are shops and restaurants popping up all the time. The nearby Gundeldinger district has cheaper hotel alternatives and is quite close to the Central Train Station. Although there are not that many high-end options in Gundeldinger, there are numerous cafés and bars here.

Kleinbasel is another interesting area to stay in Basel, with its multicultural make-up and speciality shops and eateries. Those who fancy staying out at the airport have the choice of Basel Hilton, the Ramada Plaza Basel, and Swissôtel Le Plaza Basel, on the Swiss side of the border.
