Ljubljana - Slovenia

Ljubljana is still a relative newcomer on the tourism circuit so visitors may find that the range and scope of accommodation isn't as comprehensive as other European cities. On the plus side, however, the lodging in Ljubljana is quite affordable, so most visitors should have no problem finding a room that fits both their budget and their style.

For those who wish to stay right in the heart of Ljubljana, the newly-opened Antiq Hotel is an excellent choice. Styling itself as a boutique hotel, this clean and well-appointed place is directly across from the fountain on Gornji trg. The rooms are all a bit different and priced accordingly, allowing guests to go with whatever mood suits them.

The Grand Union is another popular hotel in the central part of the city. Although it mainly targets business travellers, its pedigree dating back to 1905 is evident in its classic character and refined style. It's an excellent choice for anyone with a nostalgic whim for high ceilings and Art Nouveau facades. On the edge of town is the chic and modern Hotel Mons. With a thick forest at its back, this luxury hotel blends nature and glass in wonderful ways.

If you're a high-tech fan, the Domina Grand Media Hotel & Casino is the place to stay. When it opened in 2004, it was hailed as the planet's most technologically advanced hotel. Each room is loaded with every conceivable gadget imaginable.

Ljubljana's historic city centre has the most character and is the most popular area to stay in when touring the sights. Guests can walk to many of the attractions as well as countless restaurants and bars. The accommodation in the city centre is a mix of established hotel chains and independent lodging. During the peak summer season this part of town books up early, so make your reservations well in advance.

The outskirts of town are also a good choice if you don't mind using transport to move around. There are numerous lodging choices ringing the city such as the modern Hotel Mons, which offers convenient shuttles into the city centre throughout the day. Rates tend to be a bit cheaper in the outskirts, except for the luxury hotels, which can set their own prices regardless of location.

Travellers looking for budget accommodation can find several decent choices in the Metelkova district within Ljubljana's older section of downtown. This up-and-coming neighbourhood is undergoing a revival, with new hotels, bars, shops and restaurants opening all the time.

One big advantage to staying in Ljubljana is the price of the rooms. Compared to much of Europe, the rates are very reasonable. Smaller independent establishments usually offer the lowest room rates, while the up-market chain hotels will be comparable to prices found in other European cities. Rates are at their best during the shoulder seasons between the summer holidays and Christmas time.
