Oslo offers its visitors dozens of choices in accommodations, ranging from inexpensive private lodgings to moderately-priced hotels in the centre and the suburbs and also five-star deluxe properties. Most of the popular options are found in the centre of the city or within a reasonable distance from it.
The city's main street is called Karl Johans Gate, and runs from Sentralstasjonen (the central rail station) to the royal castle. The distance can be covered on foot in a pleasant 15-minute walk. At around the half-way point along this main thoroughfare, the popular five-star Grand Hotel is located, covering the space of an entire city block. On the opposite side of Karl Johans Gate is the upscale Hotel Karl Johan. Both of these deluxe hotels face Stortinget Close. The SAS Radisson Plaza, another top-end hotel that's also located in this area, is the tallest building in Oslo.
In the city centre is Oslo's only hotel belonging to ‘the finest hotels of the world' group. The upmarket Hotel Continental is found opposite the Nationaltheatret (National Theatre).
There are numerous three- and four-star hotels available in the centre, all of which are more moderately priced. Included among them are the Cecil Hotel, the City Hotel, the Millennium Hotel, the Rainbow Hotel Astoria, the Rica Victoria Hotel and the Tulip Inn. For traditional Norwegian-style architecture, the Hotel Bondeheimen is the best example. It is now a member hotel of the Best Western chain.
The nearby suburbs offer up some appealing and moderately-priced options. In the suburb of Frogner, a fashionable residential area, is the Rica Hotel Bygdøy. In addition, the Alle Frogner Pensjonat, ABC B&B, Dybwadsgate Pensjonat, Hotel White House and Villa Frogner Bed & Breakfast are all pleasant, comfortable and affordable options.
The well-known Vigelandsparken, a major Oslo attraction, can be reached from all the Frogner hotels on foot. For longer stays, Oslo Apartments offers a good range of self-contained units in the area, all requiring a three-night minimum stay.
Visitors can be transported from the heart of the city to the great outdoors by just a 20-minute car ride. In the spectacular Norwegian landscape, amid sparking lakes and winding streams, are hotels such as the five-star Hotel Rica Holmenkollen Park or the Lysebu Konferansesenter. The famous Trollvasshytta offers an inexpensive lodging option in traditional Norwegian wooden cabins, and the Soria Moria Hotel offers guests a fairy-tale setting for a memorable stay.
