Bergen has thousands of beds across a broad spectrum of categories, although it is primarily a mid- to high-end place with plenty of choice at the upper end. The good thing about staying in Bergen is that most of the hotels are in the town centre and the historic UNESCO Bryggen area where all amenities and attractions are within easy reach. Views from the best positioned hotels in this and other areas of town are surreal.

Bergen's top-end hotels are stylish and classy, with bundles of facilities and some of the best service in Norway. The Clarion Admiral Hotel Havnekontoret is situated right at the waterfront and is one of the very best hotels in town. The views of the town from here are marvellous and it is the best option outside the choice Bryggen area.

The top option in Bryggen is the Radisson SAS Hotel Norge, which is the epitome of luxury hotel accommodation. There is also the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in town, which is slightly downmarket from the Norge, while the classy Solstrand Hotel & Bad can be found on the outskirts of Bergen. Virtually all hotels in Bryggen area of Bergen are of exceptionally high quality although you can find some mid-range places, such as the Thon Hotel Rosenkrantz. The Strand Hotel is also mid-range and has fabulous views of Bryggen and the fish market.

Bryggen is the old historic medieval core of Bergen and the place to be based if you have deep pockets. It is by far the most charming place in Bergen, with its quaint winding alleys and ancient buildings, and nowhere is too far to walk within the town. The nearby fish market right in the centre of Bergen is another popular area to stay, as is the nearby wharf proper.

Other popular hotel areas in the town are the Valkendorfgate, the Ole Bulls Plass, and along Zander Kaaesgat street near Bergen railway station. Budget options in Bergen are few and far between and come in the form of a YMCA, good quality youth hostels and a number of quality campsites.

If you prefer to be out near the airport or can't find a top hotel to stay in town, there are a few good options. The Rainbow Bergen Airport Hotel is the closest and has the best facilities near the airport, while the Scandic Hotel is slightly farther away yet better priced. Also nearby is the swanky Quality Hotel Edvard Grieg.
