Christchurch hotels

Hotels are located all over Christchurch but the most enviable location is in the Cathedral Square vicinity, bound by Moorehouse, Fitzgerald, Deans and Bealey avenues. Prices are highest during the summer, when hotels book up well in advance. Reservations are a necessity in this season.

One of Christchurch's most sophisticated establishments is the Georgetown, a quiet and luxurious boutique hotel. The Crowne Plaza is another major contender, large and well known. It offers superb service and amenities in addition to the best location in Christchurch. The Marivale district has a number of grand manor homes including Bishop's Manor, set apart by its expansive suites and smart décor.

The area surrounding Cathedral Square is the heart of the city. Christchurch's finest hotels are found here with views over the square. Staying here allows guests to walk to and from the shopping and dining districts and major attractions. The Crowne Plaza Christchurch is a leader here though there are many other four- and five-star establishments to choose from.

A 10-minute walk west of Cathedral Square is Hagley Park, still part of the city centre. This area is especially picturesque, with botanic gardens and a golf course. This neighbourhood hosts a dense array of hotels and bed and breakfasts alongside the city's museums and art galleries. Look for the Worcester Hotel among many others.

St Albans is an older suburb in reach of the city centre. A few hotels are found here on Bealey Avenue. The best establishments in this neighbourhood are renovated historic homes, many of which have been converted into quaint inns and bed and breakfasts.

Marivale is the city's exclusive dining and accommodation district, with its array of upscale venues catering to wealthy tourists and local elite. Marivale sits on the periphery of the city centre, and guests with the notion can walk to the city centre in roughly 30 minutes. Papanui Road boasts a long line of hotels, while bed and breakfasts dot the side streets.

Those who prefer a bit more seclusion will find a few enviable neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the metropolitan area. Sumner was once a favourite retreat for locals though international tourists are more common now. The beach here is popular with surfers, and this hospitality district includes several restaurants and excellent hotels.

Lyttelton Port is another option for those who'd rather stay outside of town. The drive (via a tunnel under the harbour) takes 20 minutes, while the scenic overland route takes longer. The hotels here are quaint and quiet.
