Kyoto - Japan

Due to the recent development of this highly modern city, there are a number of top-end hotels being built here every year. Over 40 million people visit the city every year looking for luxury, business facilities or simply a bed for the night. There is something to suit everyone in all areas of the city, ranging from well-known chains in the business district to traditional guest houses in the historic heart of the city.

The Ana Hotel in the centre of town is one of the best in the city. It is a five-star facility that boasts a wide range of facilities including a business suite, spa, restaurants and fitness centre.

The Hyatt Regency in the centre of the city is another luxurious hotel, while the recently renovated Kyoto Hotel offers a chance to stay in a beautiful traditional Japanese hotel. For peace and quiet, the Westin Miyako Hotel Kyoto is located within tranquil woodlands, offering the chance for visitors to explore the surrounding area.

Many people who visit Kyoto choose to stay in ryokans. These are traditional Japanese inns and like hotels, they range from budget to lavish. Staying in a ryokan is a good way to get a feel for Japan and experience something a bit different.

If you are only in Kyoto for a few days, the most convenient places to stay are in the eastern and southwestern parts of the city. You will be centrally located and close to a wide range of shopping centres, restaurants and tourist attractions. There is also an excellent choice of hotels ranging from budget guest houses to luxurious ryokan. This area is not downtown, but is very close.

Downtown Kyoto boasts a wealth of accommodation options covering a range of prices. Many luxury hotels can be found along Kawaramachi-dori-Sanjo Kudaru while the Oike-Kawaramachi intersection is home to budget, mid-range and top-end establishments.

If you would like to stay in a traditional ryokan but your budget doesn't stretch to anything fancy, you will find many cheaper options by the railway station, just a short walk from downtown Kyoto. However, it is not just cheap and cheerful accommodation that can be found here; the area surrounding the station is also home to some very exclusive hotels such as the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto.

If you would rather stay on the outskirts of the city, the southeastern area is a lot quieter but houses a good range. Budget guest houses offer basic facilities and are suitable for travellers while mid-range hotels found here offer the perfect choice for families. The northeastern part of the city is home to a number of historic hotels and offers a real insight into a traditional Japanese way of life.
