Sardinia hotels

The ancient island of Sardinia is one of the Mediterranean's most popular off-track sun and sea travel destinations. Some of the world's most exclusive hotel groups are found here, as well as privately-owned hotels in every price range. Competition for guests is fierce on Sardinia, so the accommodation quality is usually reliable. There are also historic inns, villas and luxury seaside resorts. Just book ahead in summer as this is the peak tourism season.

The main town of Alghero is home to some of the classiest upscale hotels. The Carlos V is situated right on the promenade Lungomare Valencia, boasting amazing seaside views and full amenities. The Catalunya and Tarragona are two other great choices for their service and proximity to the Old Town.

Cagliari is the location of world famous accommodation like The Forte Village Resort, a destination in itself featuring 14 restaurants, 10 pools, seven luxury hotels and expansive lush grounds along the beach. The Hotel Le Meridien is also here, as well as the elegant Hotel Villa del Parco.

Numerous private and exclusive beachside resorts can be found scattered along the coast. The traditional fishing town of Isola Rossa is home to the stunning Pierre & Vacances resort of Calarossa. Budoni is another hot resort near Porto Ottiolu, bordered by posh San Teodoroto resort to the north and The Posada to the south.

Cagliari is the main city on Sardinia. It boasts 8kms of white sand at Poetto Beach and some of the best dining and shopping on the island. There are hotels in all categories both in and around Cagliari, including some of the most exclusive resorts like the Forte Village.

Alghero is a wonderful medieval town popular with tourists for its superb beaches and excellent dining options. The Old Town is the ideal area to stay in Alghero for its ambience and proximity to the town's amenities. There are some wonderful B&Bs here, as well as standard hotels along the edge of Old Town and down by the beach.

Costa Smeralda is arguably the most beautiful stretch of sand on Sardinia. It's the hottest resort destination for jet-setters and yachters, boasting some really amazing accommodation right on the beach. Most resorts are upscale, and bookings mainly organised by Italian tour operators, making it hard to arrange a room on your own.

Other popular towns to stay in are Olbia in the northeast, Nuoro in the centre of the island, and Bosa and Stintino, both charming seaside villages. Each town has a smattering of hotels from budget pensions to mid-range hotels. Camping is also a major activity on Sardinia so if you enjoy sleeping outdoors there are countless options.
