The ancient island of Sardinia is one of the Mediterranean's most popular off-track sun and sea travel destinations. Some of the world's most exclusive hotel groups are found here, as well as privately-owned hotels in every price range. Competition for guests is fierce on Sardinia, so the accommodation quality is usually reliable. There are also historic inns, villas and luxury seaside resorts. Alghero is a wonderful medieval town popular with tourists for its superb beaches and excellent dining options. The Old Town is the ideal area to stay in Alghero for its ambience and proximity to the town's amenities. Costa Smeralda is arguably the most beautiful stretch of sand on Sardinia. It's the hottest resort destination for jet-setters and yachters, boasting some really amazing accommodation right on the beach. Most resorts are upscale, and bookings mainly organised by Italian tour operators, making it hard to arrange a room on your own.

Other popular towns to stay in are Olbia in the northeast, Nuoro in the centre of the island, and Bosa and Stintino, both charming seaside villages. Each town has a smattering of hotels from budget pensions to mid-range hotels. Camping is also a major activity on Sardinia so if you enjoy sleeping outdoors there are countless options.
