Kowloon, the peninsula located to the north of Hong Kong Island, is considered to be one of the world's most densely populated spots, and although it lacks some of Hong Kong's glamour it offers its own distinctly Chinese vitality.
It has an array of accommodation choices from the tip of the peninsula, which is the main tourist area known as Tsim Sha Tsui, to Mong Kok, a busy area of smaller Chinese businesses.
Most visitors to Kowloon stay in Tsim Sha Tsui, as it offers the greatest number of choices in hotels and restaurants. The city's finest hotels are found here, including The Peninsula and the Hotel InterContinental.
The Peninsula is rated as one of the finest hotels in the world and is the oldest in Hong Kong, having been built in 1928. The hotel's main building exudes Hong Kong's colonial past, from its ornate lobby to its world-renowned restaurants - Gaddi's and The Verandah. A newer tower wing boasts high-tech accommodations and a popular rooftop restaurant.
From the lobby of the Hotel InterContinental Hong Kong, which stands at the water's edge, guests would be hard-pressed to find a better view of Hong Kong Island or Victoria Harbour. Most of the hotel's ultra-modern guest rooms boast harbour views, and the property's spa is said to be a cure for jet-lag. Free tai chi classes and yoga sessions add to the popularity of this top-end choice.
In addition to its top-of-the-line offerings, Tsim Sha Tsui also offers a reasonable selection of mid-range options, providing comfort as well as proximity to the city's main attractions. Those who are more budget-conscious will find affordable hotels conveniently located near the main railway station.
For those seeking a quieter area, the New Territories, situated to the north of Kowloon, provides accommodation within walking distance of parks and temples. The area, which is primarily residential, offers more than a dozen hotels and a selection of restaurants.
Business travellers often choose Mong Kok or Yau Ma Tei, located north of Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon peninsula. These locales are surrounded by Chinese businesses, but not by the souvenir shops many visitors seek.
Outside Kowloon visitors will find boutique properties and bed and breakfast choices in the Silvermine Bay area of popular and laid-back Lantau Island. Ferries depart from the Central District for Lantau, taking about one hour and passing many small islands along the way. Silvermine Bay is a small town featuring a stretch of beach, a selection of small hotels and plenty of seafood eateries.
