Hong Kong's role as a global hub of commerce, conventions and special events ensures its hotel scene remains healthy despite any economic crises. Land is extremely scarce, so expect to pay a premium for even the most basic hotel room.
Although Hong Kong's hotels definitely focus on business travellers, tourists can enjoy the high-tech amenities and stylish décor. But be sure and book your room well in advance, because this city rarely slows down.
All the world's major premium hotel chains are in Hong Kong, and they don't rest on the laurels of their reputation. The Hotel InterContinental's lobby has one of the best views of Victoria Harbour in the city, and its state-of-the-art rooms are top-notch. A superb spa and host of health classes make this a top choice.
The Four Seasons is right in the thick of things near the Central Ferry Piers, the financial district and transport links. It's the best in terms of convenience, and superlative rooms, restaurants, spas and outdoor pools help keep the chaos of downtown at bay.
Built in 1928, the historic Peninsula is the grandest of Hong Kong's hotels. Famous for its afternoon tea service, colonial splendour and the coolest lobby in town, it still keeps pace with the city's more modern hotels in every aspect. The city's tallest building is the Island Shangri-La hotel. The décor is pure Oriental and furnished with incredible style, and a panoramic top-floor French restaurant boosts this hotel's appeal.
Hotels in Hong Kong are very expensive, but you get plenty of value for the price of your room. Tsim Sha Tsui, perched at the tip of Kowloon peninsula, is the main tourist centre. This district is bursting with hotels of all kinds, including some of the finest five-star options in the city. Proximity to transport, attractions, shopping on Nathan Road and diverse dining make this the most popular hotel district.
Tsim Sha Tsui East is quieter than its cousin, yet still convenient to all the highlights and transport of Hong Kong. This is a major commercial district, but also has a tourist area containing some of the city's most expensive hotels. Causeway Bay is another major commercial district with a handful of nice hotels and superb shopping.
For an interesting scene that blends old and new Hong Kong, check out Wanchai. It's only minutes from Central but boasts the city's hottest nightlife district as well as the exhibition and convention centre. Central is the heart of Hong Kong's financial scene, and home to several swanky hotels. After business hours, however, it becomes remarkably tranquil.
Admiralty lies between Central and Wanchai, and is another upscale commercial district. There are some nice mid-range hotels here, and its proximity to Hong Kong Park is a big bonus. The most affordable hotels are clustered around Fortress Hill, just east of Causeway Bay. The local Metro station, however, ensures you can be back in the downtown action within 10 minutes.
