Mykonos has been a hot tourism destination for decades now, and as such offers an extensive selection of accommodation. As one of the most popular Greek islands, Mykonos sees its preferred hotels and resorts fully booked during the peak summer months between July and September so be sure and make reservations well in advance. Visitors can spend as much for a room as they like on Mykonos, but reasonably priced pensions and guest houses can be found if you look around.
Of the many exceptional hotels on Mykonos, Cavo Tagoo is one of the most impressive. Its cliff side setting overlooking Hora and the Aegean Sea epitomises the Greek island vista, and its island-flavoured architecture has won it several awards. Splendour like this doesn't come cheap, but it's worth every penny. The white-washed Belvedere is another favourite hotel within easy walking distance of Hora. Built in the 1850s, the rooms are classy and comfortable.
If you prefer to stay away from Hora, the St John Hotel at Ayios Ioannis is superb. Its hillside location offers panoramic views, but it's the traditional Greek island architecture and design that really stands out. A private beach, top class restaurant and spa complement the many highlights of this place. At Psarrou Beach, the Grecotel Mykonos Blu is a good choice for those seeking luxury, romance and inspiring ambiance.
Mykonos' main town, Hora, is where the bulk of the island's accommodation is located. There are many styles of lodging here, from apartment studios to pensions and classy hotels. Location is the key factor in Hora. If you want to stay in the heart of town, be prepared for late night parties at the bars. Quieter rooms can be found along the many back streets. From Hora you can commute to the beaches. Keep in mind that many places require you to stay at least three nights.
If you don't stay in Hora, you can find some truly spectacular accommodation at the many beaches ringing the island. Hot beach spots like Paradise and Super Paradise seem to rarely have an open room, but the less glamorous beaches often have surprisingly nice hotels at very good rates.
Kalafati is one such site, anchored by the popular Aphrodite Hotel. Ornos Bay features a few massive hotel resorts and also has a marina in town. Plati Yialos is another good location, with a few hotels catering to Greek families and tour groups. If it's real luxury you want, Ayios Ioannis is home to both the superlative St John Hotel as well as the Mykonos Grand. Prepare to be awed.
Psarrou Beach is another popular spot, especially for artists and jet-setters that typically stay at the splendid Grecotel Mykonos Blu. More affordable lodging can be found just north of Hora at Ayios Stephanos, where several hotels are located. Many of the hotels here, however, close from November to March.
Mykonos is very much a seasonal travel destination. Between July and September, you'll need to book your room at least two months in advance as virtually every decent hotel on the island will be fully booked. The shoulder seasons in spring and autumn are great times to visit as the rates are lower and the crowds fewer. During the winter off-season, room rates can be as much as half price but many hotels and restaurants choose to simply close down until March.
